It’s difficult to make three great albums in a row, so few bands have done it.
Albums, as it were, are going by the wayside so perhaps this discussion is mute. Even Radiohead (who can claim to have made at least three great albums in a row, more like seven) has gone on record (pun) to say it won’t be doing albums anymore, and instead release a couple of songs here and there as they see fit. The musical world, paced by iTunes, has returned to a singles market like it was in the beginning of rock ‘n’ roll.
But for an indie nerd like me, who loves the vinyl, the world still needs its albums. So it’s with great anticipation I wait for The Whigs third release In The Dark, set for release on March 16. The Athens’ bands first two albums were quite good, so I’m curious to see if they did it again.
I was fortunate to hear most of the new record in a live setting, as the trio played the majority of the new album last summer during a benefit for the Georgia Theatre. Clearly the record company is excited about the band’s lastest, as The Whigs already have a spot booked on Letterman in late March.
Parker and mates will also head on tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in lat February/early March before heading to SXSW. The dates don’t bring them to Athens, though I suspect the boys will be here sometime this year (and perhaps more than once).
