There’s never been a time when I wasn’t a fan of the Go-Go’s, the all-female pop band from the 1980s which boasted some of the decade’s peppiest songs.
The Go-Go’s certainly weren’t the first all-female band to find a massive audience, but they always seemed the most authentic. It was the first all-female band which wrote its own songs to top the Billboard charts, and its first album can be considered one of the great (if not one of the first) recordings of the New Wave era.
The band’s music was bubbly and danceable, it was party music, and these girls did like to party – much has been made of the sexual twists and turns of the band in its heyday (I even think there are some videos floating around). And Belinda Carlisle . . . let’s just say she was one of my crushes. When she’s splashing around in the water during that Our Lips Are Sealed, well . . .
Anyway.
Apparently the band was going to officially call it quits following its Happily Ever After tour, which was set to start in July. But the tour was canceled after guitarist Jane Wiedlin, who proved to be the top songwriter in the group, hurt herself in a 20-foot fall while hiking near her California home. She’s expected to have ACL surgery on her knee, and rehab is expected to take a year.
We’ll have to see if they come back next year and try and retire again. Whatever, here is the Head Over Heels video, my favorite song by the band:
