Vicious sounds in the hot summer night

The long hot days of Athens summers can yield some late-night musical treats, and a cool Canadian band will infuse some electic sounds at the Caledonia Lounge in two weeks.

The Vicious Guns, the Toronto band made of Jennie Vicious (vocals, bass) and Richey Vicious (guitar, vocals) hits Athens on July 20 with a sound which fuses guitar with electronic drums, harmonies and samples. There’s a constant dissonance running behind Jennie’s lilting voice, and as much as I hate to compare bands to the peerless Jesus and Mary Chain, they take several cues from JAMC (which is not bad at all, it’s just become all to common to compare any band with fuzzy guitars to JAMC). There’s also some New Order in here as well, which takes a break from the recent trend of comparing everyone to Joy Division.

From the band’s site: “Music is our passion, therapy, obsession, and love,” Jennie says. “We believe [that] humans are intrinsically creative and compassionate and are generally beaten down by a system and institutions that want [humans] to fit into compartments and serve their interests. we need to reclaim our power as humans to lift each other up without fail, never judge or condemn, fight the power that oppresses humanity… and follow what is in our hearts. for us that is making music.”

I still find it amazing a band from Toronto will appear in a small room in Athens, but I guess that makes Athens what it is. A promising show, for sure.
