Popfest preview: The Apples in stereo

Popfest preview: The Apples in stereo

So it used to be The Apples in Stereo, but the band has since lowercased the s in stereo, so it’s now The Apples in stereo. I’m sure it has some significance in the musical realm they live in, but I’m jut going to reserve judgment and move on now.

Robert Schneider, the band’s leading element/songwriter/lyricist formed the genesis of The Apples in 1991 after meeting Jim McIntyre on a bus on Colorado, but it wouldn’t be until after a trip to Athens (of course) when he started the band in earnest. It was during that trip to Athens when hanging around with friends Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum and Bill Doss (who joined The Apples a few years ago) that they came up with the idea for the Elephant 6 Collective.

That turned out pretty good.

The Apples have put out seven albums over the years, moving through stages of pop and psychedelic rock and heavily influenced by The Beach Boys. After a three-year album hiatus, the band is back this year with a new offering Travellers in Space and Time (Simian/Yep Roc) which has gathered some good word of mouth.

The Apples have played Popfest before, and at that show (of which I was in attendance), longtime drummer Hilarie Sidney played her last show behind the kit for the band. It’s good to have them back, hopefully this time no one else is quitting.
